Fresh Interiors For 2011

After The Holidays . . . One Step At A Time!

If your holiday decorations have made their way back to storage, you might be experiencing withdrawal from all things sparkly and bright.  It could make you feel a bit turned upside down!

HCH1MLL_mp

The great reason for continuing to have all of those “pretties” placed about could be to distract you from some of the household “to-do” items you may have missed back in the fall.  (I have seen decorations left up until Easter!)

Now that the New Year has arrived, are you feeling a little challenged by the notion of adding one more thing to your list of resolutions?  How about considering this option?  Create a “love” list instead!  Isn’t it time to make 2011 the year of “Loving The Home You’re In?”™

Jan Blog1 House aI’m here to share with you how simple it can be by taking small steps, which add up in a big way.  You can lead a well-designed life!

Rather than have you immediately focus on big areas or big projects, in the next couple of weeks, I’m going to share small steps to help you better embrace those projects when you’re ready for them.

Here’s a good “Love List”, to start:

1.  Start with one room or a small cluster of spaces.  Getting one area completed not only makes for a positive impact, psychologically, it’s allows for a better focus of how the dollars are invested.  Trying to spread a one room budget, throughout an entire home, still leaves for projects unfinished.  Of course, expansion to other areas is totally up to you!

Jan Blog Plan1

2.  Clear the clutter.  While this might seem obvious, clutter is not only about “junk”, but unless something serves a purpose, is a true treasure, or enhances the room, it’s hard to see the proverbial forest for the “stuff”.  This doesn’t mean you are 100% permanently removing those things, it just allows you to start with a fresh perspective.  For example, I’ll often have clients strip down bookcases, before I arrive, place the items on a table in a dining room, and we’ll “shop” in there, first, before eliminating or deciding to add or update the shelves.  The transformations are always amazing!

page_0r4y2w9z9p8v6l4p

3.  Take a room assessment test.  Now that the room has been somewhat cleared, take a look at what’s going on in the background.  Do the floors or floorcoverings need attention . . . cleaned, replaced, or a new area rug?  Are the walls and trim scuffed and in need of touch-up or repainting?  Does the ceiling show stains from leaks?  Without lamps, is the room dark and relying on one lone ceiling fixture?  Do you have any trim molding details which are not in proportion to the size of the room or any molding at all?  As a designer, I take a good look at the bones of a space.  I can often tell if the homeowner is spending more dollars on furniture and accessories, in effort to compensate for some missing architectural definition or function.  Temporary or cover-up solutions are only band-aids and don’t necessarily address what the “design doctor” might really need to order.

No matter the style of your home, when completed, there are certain items that will make it sparkle and shine!

Jan Blog1 Love ListI’ll continue to share some special tips and advice, throughout the month, along with some regular posts.  I’m in the process of practicing what I preach, so the Horton household has been receiving some attention to the little things, as well as some business housekeeping.  A new logo, an updated website, and even a name tweak is in the works!  (Thanks to Aimee O’Boyle, at Creative Montage for her amazing talents!)

Stay-tuned!  2011 is going to be a great year for “Loving The Home You’re In”™ !

All my best! ~ Wanda

Happy Holidays

The year comes to an end and I will close the blog for a couple of days between the years! Time to recollect my thoughts and to think about my future plans and ideas. I am so looking forward to the next year filled with new adventures.

The last days before every new year are a good time to think back and to look ahead. It is for many a time to make resolutions and start with fresh ideas and flip open a brand new page. I love the idea to begin anew!

I do look back on my experiences, the joys and sorrows, the times with friends and family, work and play!
This year was wonderful for so many reasons!

We had a long time to be with our family in Europe, we traveled with the children and showed them a new culture!

We have stuck to our plan to simplify our life, we have learned to live with a little less buying, more reading, vintage shopping instead of new!
We have cleaned our attic and the basement...
Life has been good!
And the way ahead is full of promise!

I am filled with gratitude and hope! My plans for the new year are within me and I do not have to wait to January 1 to put them into action: To live a mindful life, to love my family and be true to my friends, to always keep an open mind and a open heart!
I want to learn something new and I want to discover more of old...

Wishing you all a festive days ahead and a happy New Year! May your hopes and dreams come true!
See you all back in January!

With love!

Christmas Countdown – Day 22

Gifts From The Heart

“It isn't the size of the gift that matters, but the size of the heart that gives it.” ~ Quoted in The Angels' Little Instruction Book by Eileen Elias Freeman, 1994

As the days grow closer to Christmas, there’s no doubt some of you may be out seeking last minute gifts at the malls or opting for next day shipping from online sites.  It’s so natural to want to show loved ones and friends how much they mean to you – especially at this time of the year!

In our family, a few years ago, we decided to opt out of some of the major gift buying and chose to look at making donations to charities, which seem to have an even greater need during the holiday season.  Everyone has one or more causes, which speak to their hearts, because of a close friend or  loved one’s personal experience.

If it’s more of your custom to share a wrapped present with others, there are many ways to shop online, or in local shops, where they offer to send a portion of your purchases to your favorite charity.  In many cases, most of the proceeds will go directly to the organization.  (If you have concerns about making sure your money is wisely used, you can check it out on CharityNavigator.org.)

Here are some fun finds for folks on your list:

Cute little push-pins, from the American Heart Association.  Folks often forget stroke is a cardiovascular disease.  My family has a history so I’m more than interested in research and prevention!

Great habits can still include great food!  A heart healthy cookbook shows your loved ones you care!

Giving someone a “step up” into a new home means the world!  This folding step stool from Habitat for Humanity is under $20 and tucks out of the way.  For a shorty like me, it’s a must have!

A colorful set of flour sack towels are less than $10 and all proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association.

In our area, The Union County Christmas Bureau acts as a clearing house to assist families in need, during the holiday season.  They rely on donations of goods, money, and volunteer time to help distribute a Merry Christmas to over 2,000 applicants.  There is nothing like the face of a child when they receive an unexpected present!  That is the real gift of Christmas.

Christmas Countdown – Day 17

The Christmas House

I think in every area, there is someone who can hardly contain themselves when it comes to the joy of Christmas and sharing it with others.  In my little city, just on the outskirts of Charlotte, NC, there is a house, in the historic district, we fondly refer to as the “Christmas House”.  Of course, depending on the time of year and the holiday, it’s always decked out in the appropriate seasonal attire!

This evening, after having dinner at one of the local cafes, I asked my husband to take a drive by . . . you know, just to be reassured the holiday home spirit still lived on. It didn’t disappoint!  Even though my night photography skills on my Droid phone couldn’t possibly do it justice, I just had to see if I could take a few shots to share with you.

‘Tis the season to be jolly!

This Victorian Era home is painted in shades of green and cranberry.  All that has to be added is the icing.

IMG_20101215_192440 (2)

I’m sure the owner experiences people getting out of their cars to take pictures, on a regular basis.  I was hoping our local police wouldn’t be dialed up with the idea someone was casing the place!

IMG_20101215_192448

The lovely iron gates were tastefully dressed with a pair of wreaths.  These were some of the more subdued decorations. *wink*

BrassBed%20christmas

Another small town, with a Victorian village charm, is Cape May, New Jersey.  I made a quick stop over, many years ago, while visiting with a high school chum.  The Bacchus Inn Main House is a vision in holiday red.

Linda%20Lee%20christmas

Another bed and breakfast, the Linda Lee, fits the description of a gingerbread house to a ‘t’.  I’m not sure if it’s a reflection but I think the lap board siding might have a tint of pink.  Suddenly I feel a peppermint craving coming on!

It’s always fun to share the holiday merriment.  Do you have a special “drive by” on your list?  Maybe it’s even your own home.  If you see lights flashing outdoors, don’t be worried, it might just be an admirer!

Christmas Countdown – Day 11

Biltmore Bound!

Today, my husband and I are taking a day trip to visit the gorgeous home of George W. Vanderbilt. We’ll so enjoy making our way back to the lush estate, nestled in the Biltmore Forest area of Asheville, North Carolina.  Even though we’ve shared quite a few visits, each time always brings the anticipation of a child on Christmas morning.  We can’t wait to see what awaits us behind the entry gate!

Some Tidbits About Biltmore

Originally built as a family home and country retreat, George and Edith Vanderbilt's 250-room home was built by celebrated architect Richard Morris Hunt over a six-year period. Hunt modeled the house on three châteaux built in 16th-century France.

America’s largest home is situated on 8,000-acres and features:

  • 4 acres of floor space
  • 34 bedrooms
  • 43 bathrooms
  • 65 fireplaces
  • An indoor swimming pool, gymnasium and bowling alley

(Cited by NFHA)

Now that’s some retreat!

800px-Biltmore_Estate

As lovely as the estate is, when touring it on a daily basis, it becomes even more magical when . . .

Biltmore_christmas

. . . the Christmas decorations adorn the grounds and the interiors!

All guests receive a regal greeting.

staircase_tree_garlandart

The grand staircase balustrade is a designer’s dream.  Custom ironwork and fabulously curved handrails lead you up the limestone stairs.  Topping it off with fresh greens and lush ribbons is like putting the icing on the gingerbread!

BILTMORE XMAS E1

The grand dining hall is absolutely amazing!  There is always a tremendous tree, so large, the ornaments are as big as full-sized basketballs .  (The tree’s height is usually around 34 feet.)  No miniature trinkets would ever do it justice.  Scale and proportion are everything when it comes to good design – including Christmas trees!

It takes a pretty large crew to raise the dining hall tree.  I thought you might enjoy a time-lapse video of the event.  It’s a full day into night -  and - back into day process!  If you look at the top of the room, you might notice the 1916 Skinner pipe organ, which was played to entertain the guests during dinner.

An upper level “sitting room”.  Two fireplaces are decorated with inlaid marble.  In between, although difficult to see, are precious tapestries.  There are over one hundred Christmas trees, during the holiday event.  Can you imagine cataloging and storing all of the ornaments!

For Future Reference

While our visit, today, will be a roundtrip one, I hope the next time we’re in Asheville we’ll plan ahead for an overnight escape.  (Full weekends, during the holidays, are a real challenge in finding the time.)  Just a skip and a jump from the entry, is a new hotel, and the interiors are to die for!

G Bohemian Hotel

The lobby, of the Grand Bohemian Hotel, is reminiscent of being surrounded by a historic, hunting lodge.  I adore the four-sided fireplace!  Imagine sidling up to it on a cold, mountain evening.

Grand Bohemian Bath

At the end of the day . . . bliss!  I think the editors at Garden and Gun should send me here on assignment, don’t you?

Well, I’ll be heading out in short order!  I’m going to get my “jingle on” and spend some time with a very patient man.  After all, I’ve been writing a blog post, a day, while wearing my interior designer’s hat, and playing domestic goddess in between.  (Not so much on the domestic part, I must confess!)

I’ll be back to posting on Sunday.  I have an inkling it will be short and sweet!

Christmas Countdown – Day 5

Marvelous Mantels!

At the holidays, one of the architectural features, of which we tend to turn our decorating attention, is the fireplace mantel or chimneypiece.  Due to today’s building codes and the creation of well-vented, gas burning logs, the mantel, (if used at all), has become more of an aesthetic architectural addition, as opposed to its original function.  In medieval times, they were created as a hood piece, which went over the grate, to prevent smoke from pouring into a room.  Up to around the twelfth century, rooms were heated by a fire placed in the middle of the room, under the flooring area, called a hypocaust.  (Think of a complex, ancient version of a heated tile floor.)

History lesson aside . . . let’s look at some marvelous, holiday mantel embellishments!

ss_BHROOM_B-59 Dwarf Alberta Spruce,a mixture of greens and berries, along with sugared pomegranates make for a fabulous mantel line-up!  (Courtesy, Better Homes and Gardens)  PS – I sure would be happy to receive this mantel from Santa!  Think it would fit in his sleigh?

Christopher Hyland, a NYC interior designer, and creator of a couture home-furnishings line, showcases blue and white antique porcelain on a stately mantel from Chesney’s.

IMG_20101130_164858I recently helped a client get her home ready for holiday entertaining.  We had an extra garland so it was brought to the master bedroom where some French-wired ribbon and metallic ornaments added a twinkle of light.   A very romantic touch, don’t you think?  (Interior Concepts by Wanda, Arcadia Custom Homes)

topiaryNO08 A stand of tin trees dance across the mantel where a pair of topiaries rise up to greet them.  When bookcases are flanking a fireplace, it works well to carry the decorations over to them, as well.  The focal point becomes broadened.  (Courtesy of Canadian House and Home.)

vintage-stockings-de A mantel doesn’t always have to be over a fireplace.  In this dining room, the wall shelf provides for garland and vintage stockings to be paired with the homeowner’s collections.  Brilliant!  (Courtesy of Country Living)

A piano also becomes a lovely substitute for a fireplace.  The verdant green and a peak of turquoise aren’t too shabby for a chic display!

Mantel, mantel on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?  I would love to hear how you decorate your mantel for the holidays!  Thanks for leaving a note!

Wrapping It Up – Eco Style

It’s easy, when in a hurry, to want to grab the nearest gift bag, stuff in some tissue and the gift, and be on your way.  Yours truly has been guilty of this activity, too!  - And I’m not taking an oath that it won’t happen again, during the next few weeks. :)  When I allow myself a little extra time; however, I actually take pleasure in adorning a box with beautiful papers, textural ribbons, and whatever little ornament or accent I might find.

Personal touches are part of the art of gift giving.

yhst-69872478006310_2135_28942619 (2)You can tell these wraps, from Fish Lips Paper Design, must have been created by someone with a background in interiors!   Kimi Chronis, the company’s owner, while working as an interior designer, developed a strong interest in sustainability and became a LEED, (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Designs), accredited professional.

yhst-69872478006310_2135_1767999 (2)Here is a close-up of one of the featured paper patterns – ‘Chrazy’.  We all need a little of that in our lives, in the good sort of way!

Cosmic Frosted Blue The retro and Mid-Century modern movement has become quite popular in the design world.  When I saw this ‘Cosmic Christmas Frosted Blue’ pattern, it made me smile as I remembered Sunday evening tv and the Jetsons series (1962-1963). The design is from Nashville Wraps and is part of their Green Way® Eco-Friendly packaging group.

ml801_1297_curlyq_xlTopping the gift is truly the icing on the cake.  Conserving on materials is a great way to “go green” with your gifting.  This bow was made from the paper, itself.  Click on the image, above, to learn how!

la100429_1203_curls_xlSo, maybe this cascade of ribbon may not conserve as much on the materials, but it is to die for!  (And it does feature such a lovely shade of teal!)

Need a little tutorial on how to tie a bow?  Eddie Ross shares a great video tip:

ld102433_1106_tastefulltag_xlAs Eddie shared in his video, satin ribbons can easily be used again, via ironing.  The gingerbread embellishments can actually be consumed.  Who would ever toss those out?!

I hope today’s post has inspired you to spend a bit more thought and time on presenting a gift to your favorite someone.  I’d say, “It’s a wrap!”
